April is a special month for me—it’s my birthday month, and it marks the official start of spring! As we welcome the brighter days and warmer weather, nature reminds us of the potential for growth, renewal, and transformation. The same energy that breathes life into the flowers and trees can also inspire us to reflect on our own growth as individuals. This season is the perfect time to pause, review, and explore what truly matters to us.
This year, I’ve embraced the word values as my guiding theme. Values are the core principles that shape our lives and decisions, yet many of us don’t take the time to identify them consciously. As we embark on this season of blossoming, I encourage you to explore your own values—what do you stand for, and how do your values shape your actions, your relationships, and your purpose?
Why Values Matter
Values serve as our inner compass, guiding us through the ups and downs of life. When we live in alignment with our values, we feel more fulfilled, grounded, and authentic. But when we’re disconnected from them, life can feel uncertain, chaotic, or out of control. Just as the earth shifts with the changing seasons, we too evolve—our values may shift, deepen, or become clearer over time.
As we enter spring, it’s the perfect opportunity to refresh and realign with the values that matter most to us. Consider this your invitation to nurture your personal growth, just as Mother Nature nurtures the earth around us.
My Values: Community, Creativity, and Authenticity
For me, three core values stand out:
Community – We are all interconnected. Connection and belonging are essential to our well-being. Whether it’s with family, friends, or a larger community, fostering meaningful relationships is central to a fulfilling life. As a therapist, I see how important it is for people to feel supported and heard by others. This spring, I encourage you to reflect on the communities you belong to—and the communities you wish to create. How can you deepen your sense of connection with others?
Creativity – Creativity is not just for artists; it’s a way of thinking, problem-solving, and expressing who we are. It’s an essential part of growth and transformation. Creativity flourishes when we give ourselves permission to experiment, make mistakes, and try new things. Whether it’s through art, writing, or even how we approach challenges in our daily lives, creativity is a source of renewal. As the seasons change, how can you tap into your creative energy and explore new forms of self-expression? Mine is going to include some "dopamine decor" (more on that later!).
Authenticity – At the core of living a fulfilling life is being true to yourself. Authenticity means embracing who you are without apology. It’s about showing up in the world as your genuine self, without wearing a mask or pretending to be someone you’re not. This spring, think about how you can honor your true self. Are there areas in your life where you’re holding back or not fully expressing who you are?
Spring Into Action: Reflect on Your Own Values
As the flowers bloom and the world comes alive around us, take this time to reflect on your values. The changing seasons invite us to grow, evolve, and embrace new possibilities. Review your own values—do they still align with the person you are becoming? What areas of your life feel most in alignment with your values, and where do you feel the need for change or growth?
Start by asking yourself these questions:
What do I truly care about?
What brings me joy, fulfillment, and peace?
How can I live in a way that aligns with my deepest beliefs and desires?
Are there areas of my life where I’ve been living out of alignment with my values?
As we blossom into this new season, take the time to reflect on your values and how you want to embody them moving forward. This is a season of renewal—not only for nature but for your own life. Just as the earth blooms and comes alive, you have the opportunity to do the same.
I’m excited for all the growth that lies ahead, both for you and for me. Let’s embrace our values and celebrate the journey of becoming.
